Lipok Social Foundation strives to increase the tree cover in the farms and open areas - both for combating climate change, and also to bring about better livelihoods of the farmers. The team raises awareness about the importance of trees in community meetings and in schools.
In a remarkable display of joint effort and commitment to sustainable development, almost 30,000 fruit trees of diverse varieties were planted in the farms of small farmers
residing in the villages of Paithan Taluka, Aurangabad district. This significant initiative, was done in partnership with EcoSattva, Grindmaster India Pvt Ltd, and the
Sustainable Green Initiative. This partnered initiative is a vital step towards empowering rural communities and fostering a more resilient agricultural landscape.
These fruit trees, planted with the meticulous care and attention by the participating farmers, hold immense promise for the future. It is anticipated that within three
years, their presence will significantly enhance the incomes of these small farmers, ushering in a new era of economic stability and prosperity for the villages.
The success of this intervention hinges on the climatic factors and the ability of the farmers to take care of the saplings till they grow to trees.
Following six weeks of planning and collaborative effort, the Lipok Social Foundation (LSF) successfully implemented the "Seed Ball" project on June 17, 2021, aimed at enhancing biodiversity and green cover around the villages.
A workshop held on Environment Day (June 5th) sparked the initiative, where villagers resolved to find ways to improve their green environment. The plan for utilizing seed balls was conceived and unanimously agreed upon during this workshop.
Volunteers, including young men and women from the village, actively participated in collecting seeds of various traditional and drought-resistant tree varieties, includingकडुलिंब, सीताफळ, जांभूळ, शेवरी, पेरू, रिठा, चिंच, निंब, शेवगा, विलायती चिंच, and रामफळ. These seeds were sun-dried for 2-3 days. The project utilized organic soil, kept moist inthe shade for a week before mixing it with compost at a 50:50 ratio. This mixture was then kept moist for another 2-3 days. Finally, on the 10th day, the soil-compost mix wasformed into balls, each containing 2-3 seeds of different varieties. These "seed balls" were ready to be thrown after two days.
On July 17th, the "seed balls" were strategically "bombed" on the slopes of hillocks, along stream banks, and any available open spaces. A gathering at the community temple, attended by villagers and LSF team members, highlighted the significance of trees and the role of "seed balls" in their conservation. The enthusiastic youth eagerly raced to the hillock, armed with egg trays containing the "seed balls." Over 1,500 seed balls were launched that day, marking the beginning of a promising initiative. With continued enthusiasm and dedication, the project aims to eventually cover the hillock with over 1,000 new trees.
